The Curlew web site has become so well known in the industry that it has become the bench mark for second equipment prices! I've been told that it's now use as a verb i.e. "To Curlew it" - to buy or sell event equipment on the internet.

The site began in 1999 the same year as www.google.co.uk . www.curlew.co.uk soon became the largest web site dedicated to marquees. In 2006 it started running classified adverts for other peoples equipment. It was an overnight success. It obviously fulfilled the need for an easy way of selling equipment cheaper and more reliably than auction sites.

The name comes from a moorland bird. Original called "Curlew Camping" the company stared by Ben Dawson and Kevin McNeice in 1984. Then we repaired camping tents and awnings as well as hired out marquees. Over the years we gradually specialized in Marquees and equipment hire. For the next 20 year Curlew grew to be a medium sized marquee company (turnover of 3/4 million with 50 marquees) employing up to 25 people in the high season. However due to familial circumstances both the hire and sale business were liquidated.
